How we cover festivals (editorial principles)

Cultural sensitivity is the defining editorial discipline for this category. Festivals are sacred to someone · we report them that way.

1

Accuracy · not exoticism

Robert + the local team explain religious + cultural significance the way locals understand it · NOT the way Lonely Planet "exotic Asia" listicles do. If we describe Tết, we describe it from inside a Vietnamese family · not from a tourist hotel lobby.

2

Photography + dress code respected

Religious days (Visak Bochea · Pchum Ben · Perfume Pagoda) carry explicit etiquette · we document each rule before any traveler signs up. No flash inside pagodas · shoulders covered · shoes off · no photos of monks without consent.

3

No marketing-fluff "festivals"

Hue Festival is real (5-decade royal tradition) · "Hanoi Food Festival" is a tourism-board marketing event masquerading as cultural tradition. We don't list the second kind. If a "festival" is < 10 years old, sponsored by a hotel chain, or has no religious/cultural root · it's not on this hub.

4

Cancellation alerts · 48-hour SLA

If a festival is cancelled, postponed, or scope-reduced (e.g., COVID Tết 2021 · 2023 Hue Festival delay) we update the relevant festival page within 48 hours of the official announcement and email anyone who booked a festival-timed tour.

Curated by Robert Nguyen

Founder · 25 years timing trips around Asian festivals

Festivals are the single most under-explained category in Asia travel. Western search results either treat Tết as a one-line fact ('Vietnamese New Year') or as exotic spectacle ('mystical traditions'). It's neither — it's the deepest week of family life all year, and it's also the worst week to visit if you don't speak Vietnamese. I built this hub so travelers can decide honestly. Every festival here is one I've personally attended, sometimes annually for two decades.

Festivals FAQ

The questions travelers ask when first considering a festival-timed Asia trip.

Should I visit Vietnam during Tết?
Only if you've prepared deeply. Tết is Vietnam's most family-internal week — businesses close 5-7 days, transport doubles in cost, most tours don't run. If you have a Vietnamese friend hosting you, GO. If you're just curious, arrive Jan 28 or Feb 8 (book-end Tết) to catch the prep + recovery atmosphere without the full closure.
What's the difference between Tết and Khmer New Year?
Tết = lunar new year (late Jan/early Feb) · family-internal · businesses closed. Khmer NY = solar fixed (April 13-15) · 3-day water-throwing public celebration · more visitor-friendly. Both are national-level "biggest holiday of the year" but the experience is night-and-day different.
Is Hoi An Lantern Festival just once a year?
No — it happens every full moon, 12 times a year, on the 14th of each lunar month. Old Town turns off electric lights for one night · thousands of silk lanterns. Pricing is virtually unchanged from any other Hoi An night, making it the easiest "festival experience" to time.
How do the festival dates stay up to date?
We recompute each festival's next date every year (and after each festival passes) based on its recurrence pattern — lunar, solar-fixed, biennial, and so on — so the dates you see are always current. The Tết page never goes stale every February.
Will ATL warn me if a festival is cancelled or postponed?
Yes · within 48 hours of an official announcement. We update the relevant festival page, email anyone booked on a festival-timed tour, and refund/reschedule per our cancellation policy. This happened with COVID Tết 2021 + the 2023 Hue Festival delay · our response time is the same.
Can I attend Visak Bochea or Pchum Ben as a non-Buddhist?
Yes, with cultural sensitivity. These are sacred religious days · dress modestly (shoulders + knees covered), remove shoes at pagodas, no flash photography, ask before photographing monks. Local guides walk you through etiquette before each visit. We don't market these as "tourist spectacles" — they're sacred days that travelers are welcome to observe respectfully.
Which festival is easiest for a first-time Asia visitor?
Hoi An Lantern Festival (Vietnam · monthly · low pricing impact · photogenic + easy crowds) for Vietnam. Khmer New Year in Battambang (Cambodia · April · participatory water-throwing · 1/3 the Siem Reap crowds) for Cambodia. Both are visitor-friendly without the cultural-immersion intensity of Tết.
How accurate are the dates listed here?
Solar-fixed festivals (Reunification, National Day, Khmer NY, Independence, Coronation) are exact. Lunar festivals are computed from the actual lunar calendar · government-published dates take precedence when they differ. Updates land within 48 hours of any official government calendar revision.
