History
Ha Long Bay was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 for its outstanding geological value. The bay's 1,600+ islands and islets are remnants of a karst landscape formed over 500 million years through tropical weathering and tectonic activity. Legend says a dragon descended into the sea, scattering jade pearls that became these mythical islands — hence the name Ha Long ("descending dragon").
Insider tips
Book a 2-day cruise with an overnight on the bay · the morning mist before 8am is the iconic photo · avoid weekends in summer (May-Aug) to dodge domestic-tourist crowds · check operator licensing (we vet all our cruise partners).
