Overview
Sapa, in Vietnam's far north, is a landscape of rice terraces stacked up the sides of the Muong Hoa valley and hill-tribe villages β Black H'mong, Dzao, Tay, Dzay β that have farmed these slopes for generations. This two-day trek walks between them with a local guide, away from the roads and the day-tripper crowds, and overnights in a valley homestay.
The classic route drops from Sapa town to Cat Cat village at the foot of Fansipan, then treks the trail from Y Linh Ho through the Black H'mong village of Lao Chai and on to Ta Van, home of the Dzay people β around 9km along Muong Hoa Stream through some of the most spectacular terraced scenery in Southeast Asia. You sleep in the valley, not in a hotel in town, and wake up among the rice fields.
