Overview
Chiang Mai, in the mountainous north of Thailand, is the country's ethical-elephant capital — and this day out is built around a camp that treats its elephants with respect. There is no riding, ever. Instead you spend the day with rescued elephants: feeding them, walking with them, and bathing them in the river, learning about each animal from the mahouts who care for them.
The setting is the Mae Wang area outside the city, where the day combines elephant time with a short forest walk, a visit to a Karen hill-tribe community, and gentle bamboo rafting on the Mae Wang river — no white-water, just the relaxed variety.
